I think the part about superior intellect based on preference, to some extent, can be considered true. That is, someone of lesser intellect is likely to enjoy music that more clearly associates with a mood, feeling or situation. Because trance allows for the listener to associate with it, without there being any words to describe the emotions, situation, etc., it's harder to connect with on a level that will make someone necessarily favor it over other kinds of music.
This, of course, isn't a one way street. For instance, i have a friend whose name shall remain anonymous for the sake of politeness in regard to what i know he would think, anyway, i digress. All he listens to is Metal. He listens to it because it is blatantly angry music. He considers himself a generally angry person. On the other hand, he hates trance music. There's no connection that he can see, between him and the music, that is cause for any sort of comfort.
In short, it allows for one to use their imagination and other cognitive processes to fill in the blanks. musical to emotional ad-libbing.
