FreeRice.com – Feed the World

Posted by Anirudha on November 13, 2007

Today while talking with my friend, he mentioned about the site FreeRice.com .FreeRice.com

It provides English vocabulary for free. Its like vocabulary game, for every one correct answer it donates 10 grains of rice to United Nations World Food Program (WFP) .

It helps to end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.

The FreeRice began on 7 October 2007 and the donations are increasing exponentially.

The rice is paid for by the advertisers who put their banners on the site.

So go there, improve and test you vocabulary and help end the hunger.

Aloneness is the First Lesson of Love

Posted by Anirudha on November 7, 2007

This is one of those articles that made a lot of difference in my life couple of years back. Thought of sharing it with all. I’m not a follower of Osho, came across this article through some magazine.

Discourse: Osho

Without the other we don’t know who we are, we lose our identity. The other becomes a mirror and we can see our faces in it. Without the other we are suddenly thrown to ourselves. We are greatly inconvenienced because we don’t know who we are when we are alone.
With the other, things are clear, defined. We know the name, we know the form, we know the person — Hindu, Christian, Indian, American — there are some ways to define the other. How to define yourself ?
Deep down there is an abyss… undefinable emptiness. You start merging into that. It creates fear. You become frightened. You want to rush towards the other. The other helps you to remain out. When there is nobody you are simply left with your emptiness.
Nobody wants to be alone. The greatest fear in the world is to be left alone. People do a thousand and one things just not to be left alone. You imitate your neighbours so you are just like them. You lose your individuality, you lose your uniqueness, you just become imitators, because otherwise, you will be left alone.
You become part of a crowd, a church, an organisation. Somehow you want to merge with a crowd where you can feel at ease, so that you are not alone.
To be alone is really the greatest miracle. That means now you don’t belong to any church or organisation, you don’t belong to any theology or ideology — socialist, communist, fascist, Hindu, Christian, Jain, Buddhist — you don’t belong, you simply are. And you have learnt how to love your indefinable, ineffable reality. You have come to know how to be with yourself.
Loneliness is absence of the other. Aloneness is the presence of oneself. Aloneness is very positive. It is an overflowing presence. You are so full of presence that you can fill the whole universe with your presence and there is no need for anybody.
If the whole world disappears this zen master will not miss anything; he will be as happy as ever. He will love that tremendous emptiness, this pure infinity. He will not miss anything because he has arrived home. He knows that he himself is enough unto himself.
This does not mean that a man who has become enlightened and has come home does not live with others. In fact, only he is capable of being with others. Because he is capable of being with himself he becomes capable of being with others. If you are not capable of being with yourself, how can you be capable of being with others?
A man who loves his aloneness is capable of love, and a man who feels loneliness is incapable of love. A man who is happy with himself is full of love, flowing. He does not need anybody’s love, hence he can give. When you are in need how can you give? You are a beggar. And when you can give, much love comes towards you. It is a natural response. The first lesson of love is to learn how to be alone.
Try it, to have the feel. Just sit alone sometimes. That’s what meditation is all about — just sitting alone, doing nothing. If you start feeling lonely then there is something missing in your being, then you have not been able yet to understand who you are.
Then go deeper into this loneliness until you come to a layer when suddenly loneliness transforms itself into aloneness. Loneliness is the negative aspect of aloneness. If you go deeper into it one moment is bound to come when suddenly you will start feeling the positive aspect of it. Because both aspects are always together.

EA Need for Speed ProStreet Demo

Posted by Anirudha on November 6, 2007

On 1st November Electronic Arts(EA) released the demo of next installment of Need for Speed series, NFS ProStreet. The game is due to launch on 14th November. After last years disappointing NFS Carbon release, I have high hopes from this one.

This time EA went for more realism instead of arcade gameplay. The graphics are notched up a lot than NFS Carbon. The demo has 2 gameplay modes, Grip and Speed modes. EA has added the damage system to the game for much needed realism to it.

My System Specification.

Intel Core 2 2.2

Intel 965 mobo,

Corsair 2 GB ram in dual channel mode(1066mhz)

Geforce 7600GT 256mb with Zalman cooling solution

Creative T6060 5.1 speaker system.

Viewsonic 19” widescreen LCD panel

Seagate 360GB HDD

The demo ran quite smooth on my system at 1024×68x85 resolution and everything turned to high. I was a bit worried since NFS Most Wanted had known issues of fps drop occasionally. NFS ProStreet continued the legacy of compiling impressive set of music this time too but again missing on the adding custom user music playlist while racing. And yeah it also has my favourite track “Fuck More-Junkie XL feat Lauren Rocket”, wonder this game will be played mostly by teens. The rating of this game is ‘E’ 10+!!!.

Here’s some captures while playing the demo in 1024×768 resolution on above system specifications.

Heres the damage screenshots

The Menu and Pit

Waiting to get my hands on ProStreet!!

OpenSocial API Launched

Posted by Anirudha on November 6, 2007

On November 1,2007 Google released OpenSocial API ( Application Programming Interface) for web-based social networking applications. Applications implementing the OpenSocial APIs will be interoperable with any social network system that supports them. After the launch of OpenSocial google started giving limited sandbox developer access to orkut. It has a lot of launch partners including Myspace, Friendster, Hi5 and many more.

I got the sandbox access to orkut on 4th itself. So the first thing that I noticed was the profile page, it contained a preview of the album and videos of the user.

Here’s the screenshot.

Played a while with the demo applications provided. Some applications failed to run on Mozilla Firefox but worked with IE7. After going through the API documentation and writing some demo applications thought of trying out other OpenSocial applications. Found this facebook application on Vivek Jishtu’s blog which embeds Facebook into Orkut. It worked pretty fine except some known issues.

Here’s the screenshot.

Still playing around and trying out more OpenSocial applications on Ning.com for now.

The new platform seems pretty cool and ease to write code. Looking forward to some serious applications from developers soon. This would definitely change the scenario in social networking circuit and the way people use to interact through some innovative applications.
